Petsmile Review & Giveaway – The Clinically Proven Toothpaste We’ve Been Waiting For!

If you’ve been on my blog for a while, you’ve probably seen me introduce dog toothpaste and dental care a few times. If not, a quick refresher:

Those of us with puppies need to pay special attention to our dog’s teeth. The smaller the dog, the smaller the mouthand due to overcrowding, they are more prone to dental problems.

I’ve tried countless dog toothpastes and the only one that has given us a significant improvement until now is Virbac, which I’ve been using since I was a kid. It hasn’t changed in nearly two years.

Virbac is very good, but it still comes in this twisted, rusted and musty metal tube. I never really finished a tube of this stuff until it became unusable.

It’s very frustrating when you have a puppy who gets a lot of new plaque after missing a brush or two.

So you can imagine my excitement when a Petsmile representative contacted me to write a review for their dog toothpaste, which has been clinically tested and approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC).

And, also, ANDDDDDD…

You don’t even have to swipe it. This is a “brushless” formula. It works even if you just put it on your dog’s teeth No brush teeth.

They still recommend brushing to remove food particles for best results.

When I’m super tired and don’t feel like brushing, I’m glad I can dab some on the surface of their teeth and they’ll still benefit from it.

How does Petsmile work?

Before we dive into how this dog toothpaste works, let’s first understand what’s going on in our dog’s mouth.

When dogs (and humans!) eat, bacteria in the mouth break down the carbohydrates in the food we eat and produce acids as waste.

To protect tooth enamel from acidic waste, a transparent film composed of proteins called pellicle formed on each tooth. This happens within minutes of eating.

The pellicle works to protect teeth from acidic waste, and it also forms a barrier between our teeth and the bacteria that cause plaque buildup.

This is both good and bad. The pellicle naturally protects our teeth, but bacteria can attach to it, causing plaque to form, a sticky biofilm that hardens into tartar if not removed.

Most toothpastes for people and dogs contain silica, an abrasive ingredient that partially removes pellicle but also scrubs tooth enamel, which can lead to sensitivity over time.

That’s why humans (and sometimes dogs too) go to our dentist – to remove the pellicle completely for a thorough cleaning.

Petsmile contains something called Calprox®an encapsulated form of calcium peroxide and minerals.

calcium phosphorus® Dissolves pellicle, remineralizes tooth enamel, and prevents bacteria from adhering to teeth.

calcium phosphorus® Also a key ingredient in the brand Humanity The toothpaste called Supersmile – yes, they were originally a human dental brand – and I’m very curious about that. I haven’t tried it, but the fact that this is the only dog toothpaste that’s actually made by a dentist – not just a peppermint syrup – is very interesting information.

Why Petsmile is VOHC Approved

Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC) protocol How a product must be clinically tested to receive a seal of approval.

When testing Petsmile shows 62% reduction in plaque and a 28% reduction in gingivitis compared to the control toothpaste.

Currently, Petsmile is the only dog toothpaste on the VOHC approved dog dental product list.

Does Petsmile work for us?

We’ve been using Petsmile almost every night for about six weeks.

When I forget to use it, I can notice a big difference in Matilda’s breathing.

Sadly I didn’t take any “before” pictures as I didn’t have much expectations for the result. Matilda needs a professional cleaning so she has some noticeable tartar, but I’m surprised there is so little. I remember her teeth were worse before we started using Petsmile, but I don’t have any pictures to compare.

Cow had a dental cleaning a few months ago and her teeth are still spotless. However, she is not as prone to tartar as Matilda.

Overall, I’m impressed with the results I’ve seen, the breath is improved, fresher, and how receptive my dog is to the taste.

When I’m too tired to brush, I can put a little Petsmile on the brush or even my fingers and let them lick it off. They were intrigued by the taste of London Roast.

Petsmile toothbrush

Another thing that has kept me up at night for years – yes, I’m obsessed with my dog’s teeth – is the difficulty of finding a toothbrush that fits Matilda’s tiny mouth. I’ve tried children’s toothbrushes, they’re too big, and the Japanese hamster toothbrush, which is better, but doesn’t hold much toothpaste – I’m in love with the Petsmile toothbrush.

I actually use the larger side for the Cow and the smaller side for the Matilda. Like it was designed for us.

OK, so no one in my life understands how excited I am about Petsmile’s toothbrush and toothpaste. I know this is weird. But I know that at some point, my readers get it. Poor dental health in dogs means bacteria can harm their entire body, and eventually finding the right solution can hopefully add more healthy years to their lives.

seriously. You must try Petsmile.
