‘Predator Run’ exercise brings together four Pacific military personnel

Australian Army’s annual combat exercise 1stone The Brigade, the Marauder’s Run, combines elements of the four nations.

Conducting at the Army Tropical Training Range southeast of Humpty-Doo in the Northern Territory country, the brigade coordinates multiple battle groups including troops from the Australian Army, the Philippine Army, the Malaysian Army and the United States Marine Corps (Marine Rotation Force- Darwin’s soldiers. The collection and use of such a regional multinational force under common command can be seen as an example of what military responses to potential future needs in the South Pacific can be expected.

The exercise ended on September 5 with a live-fire exercise event that saw not only joint operations of military units from different countries, but also the direct integration of soldiers from different countries into small units. Among them were Malaysian gunners on duty within Australian artillery batteries.

Malaysian Armed Forces Major Fahmi A. Razak, battery commander, shared in the Australian Defence Defence report that “we are here to learn and integrate with Australian artillery”.

Soldiers from both armies have learned to overcome differences in language, procedures and equipment — challenges they also face when fighting together in actual combat. Shared experiences are mutually beneficial.

Gaining one-on-one familiarity with soldiers who may be required to fight in combat is an added bonus. Having confidence in the reliability and proficiency of the units beside or supporting you is a critical component of achieving an effective combat organization—especially challenging for a joint multinational force.

Exercises like the Predator Run provide the foundation for achieving these goals.
