Professor Nicholas Christie-Blick named 2021 AAAS Fellow

The world’s largest scientific society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), has selected five Columbia faculty members to join its 2021 class of AAAS fellows.
Including Nicholas Christie stylingProfessor and Research Scientist of Earth and Environmental Sciences Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, recognized for his research in sedimentary geology, tectonics, and sea level change, as well as for his undergraduate teaching. During his annual field trips to Death Valley, Christie-Blick asks students to actively explore the places they visit and even draw the structures they observe. “Their drawings aren’t necessarily good — that’s not the point,” he said. “This is the whole exercise watch This helps their understanding. “
Other new AAAS researchers from Columbia include: neuroscientist Gary W. Miller, chemist Gerard Parkin, evolutionary biologist Dustin Rubenstein and geneticist Michael M. Shen.
The Columbia University researchers are among 564 scientists, engineers and innovators honored in 2021. “AAAS is proud to honor the AAAS Fellows to the brightest minds of today, who are vital to forging our future path,” said Sudip Parikh, the association’s chief executive officer. “We celebrate the invaluable contributions of these distinguished individuals to the scientific enterprise.”
