Reduce our plastic waste to save our oceans

*Partnered with Oceans Plastic Free.

The amount of plastic waste we generate in our daily lives is absolutely eye-opening. Did you know that there are more than 2 million tonnes of plastic waste in the UK every year, which equates to around 36 kilograms per person? Are you shocked? !
But there are ways to help us keep our oceans as clean as they should be.

we have been with Ocean plastic free They recently got involved in a wonderful activity – Reimagining the Ocean: A Film in Polluted Waters. It cleverly uses Hollywood movies to show what they would look like in the face of the massive amount of plastic pollution facing our oceans today.

Illustration from the movie Jaws, but with plastic pollution in the ocean and plastic caught in shark teeth.

With that in mind, here are just a few ways we can all play a role in keeping plastic waste to a minimum.

Use greener products

Use as many eco-friendly products as possible in your home. Here are some ways to do it –

  • Swap the plastic toothbrush for a bamboo toothbrush.
  • Use glass jars for storage.
  • Make your own reusable products like these handy crochet hooks facial scrub.
  • Use a bar of soap instead of a plastic bottle of hand sanitizer.
  • Introduce more wooden toys or Bioplastics If you have children.
  • try reusable hygiene products.
  • When shopping for groceries, use the bag for life.
  • Ditch the disposable water bottles for a more sustainable option.

Collect trash on your next walk

We often walk the canals with a few bags and you’d be surprised how much trash is thrown away by boaters and passersby. The number of times we’ve had to fish plastic bags out of canals or from weirs around our house. this is too scary.

Beware of accepting single-use plastics

Use sustainable brands wherever possible. Leave a positive review for an eco-friendly brand. That could be because they use paper straws, zero-plastic takeout packaging, or offer refills.
This all helps to send a message that manufacturers and brands alike should work harder to be sustainable and eco-friendly.

The last is the most obvious…

Recycle!

Recycling really helps keep plastic waste out of our oceans. Recycle everything as much as possible to minimize the circulation of any new plastic.
If you have children, involve them in the recycling process too, after all, you are working to improve their future.
