Ingredients and Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for stir-fried shrimp, the role of each ingredient in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements see Recipe card below.
- shrimp – I used 31-40 size jumbo shrimp, but smaller or jumbo shrimp will work too. If using different sizes, adjust cooking time. Peel the skin and gluten, leaving the tail on for added flavor. I don't recommend cooking frozen shrimp as they will release more water into the pot which will dilute the flavor, so if frozen, defrost them first.
- olive oil – You can also use avocado oil or any neutral cooking oil you like.
- garlic – For best flavor, use fresh garlic. If not available, 1 tsp canned minced garlic Or 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder will do.
- spices – chili and crushed red pepper flakes Adds warm flavor and spice to sauteed shrimp. If you want to add a bit of cumin, that would work well here too.
- Lemon slices – Optionally serve with lemon wedges, but a squeeze of fresh lemon juice will jazz up the dish.
