A Seattle woman claimed that she was humiliated and threatened by a flight attendant for trying to throw her daughter’s dirty diapers into the bathroom trash can.
Farah Naz Khan, a 34-year-old endocrinologist, told NBC News When the incident occurred, she was flying a Mesa Airlines flight from Montana to Houston. Her husband and daughter who are less than 2 years old are with her.
During the flight, Khan and her daughter went to the diaper changing station at the back of the plane because there was no diaper changing station at the front. Then, she put the dirty diaper in a scented trash bag and threw it into the toilet trash can. Khan said she did it the right way, and has done it many times.
On the way back, she met a male flight attendant. “When I walked back to the front with my diaper wipes container and the mat we used to change my daughter’s diaper, the flight attendant accosted me and said:’Did you just throw the diaper back there? This is a biological hazard.” ,” Khan told NBC News.
Although she tried to explain, Khan said the waiter continued to yell at her. She claimed that the waiter then asked her to remove the used diapers from the trash can, which she described as a humiliating and degrading experience.
“It’s very frustrating, the whole situation is humiliating, degrading, and discriminatory,” Faranaz Khan told KIRO-7.
She said he did not apologize. She added: “Even though I rummaged through the bathroom trash during the pandemic, I still caused him inconvenience.” “I’m pretty sure this is more harmful to my health than diapers in the trash to other people on the plane. Much bigger.”
Khan then asked another flight attendant on the plane for a garbage bag. However, the second waiter told her that she had properly handled the diapers. The second flight attendant called the first flight attendant, and when Khan tried to speak to him, he refused to contact him.
She had to put the soiled diaper by her feet until the flight landed, and it could only be handled in the terminal. Khan subsequently submitted a customer service incident report upon landing.
However, a few hours later, she received a call from an unidentified 1-800 phone number. “When I picked up the plane, it was the same flight attendant who said that I was included on the’No-fly List’ because of a biohazard incident,” Khan said.
“I said,’If this is true, I will need to seek legal recourse because I have filed a customer service complaint about this incident,” she said. “When I said this, the tone of the person on the other end of the phone completely changed, from pretending to be threats about the no-fly list to humiliating, demeaning and verbally harassing me and my family,” Khan claimed.
“He said,’You guys are taking your kids around. You should drive around. Don’t you know that no one wants to listen to your kids?
After Khan launched a social media campaign on the matter, the airline contacted her and promised to “escalate the matter in appropriate channels.”
At the same time, a Mesa spokesperson told NBC News in a statement, “The details described by our customers do not meet the high standards Mesa has set for us. Flight attendant We are reviewing this matter. ”
