The Easy Recipe for Shepherd’s Pie

I didn’t grow up on shepherd’s pie. But since making this recipe, I can’t stop!

This easy shepherd’s pie recipe is the perfect dish when you’re craving something hearty and comforting. It’s packed with protein and fall vegetables and topped with a creamy sweet potato or cauliflower puree.

What is Shepherd’s Pie?

Shepherd’s pie is a hearty dish made with ground meat and mixed vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes and baked.

Shepherd’s pie is traditionally made with ground lamb, but you’ll often see it made with other types of meat as well.

What’s the difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie?

Shepherd’s Pie and Farmhouse Pie are essentially the same thing. The only difference is the meat used. Shepherd’s pie is traditionally made with ground lamb. Farmhouse pie is traditionally made with ground beef.

so, technically This recipe is a variation on a cottage pie. But these terms are often used interchangeably!

This shepherd’s pie recipe is made with a simple ground beef base and two different kinds of mashed potatoes: cauliflower and sweet potatoes! Here’s what you need:

ground beef base

Ingredients for shepherd's pie in a bowl.
  • olive oil: You need a bit of oil to fry the spices and vegetables.
  • Aromatics: We are making a savory base with minced garlic and chopped onion.
  • vegetable: Our vegetarian blend contains mushrooms, carrots and frozen peas. Feel free to use other vegetables if you like.
  • Ground beef: Use grass-fed ground beef. I recommend lean ground beef so it’s not too greasy. If you notice excess grease, drain it before assembling the pie.
  • in stock: You can use beef or chicken stock.
  • seasoning: I keep the ground beef base simple with just salt and pepper. Feel free to add any other seasonings you like if you want to spice it up a bit.

  • Roasted Sweet Potatoes: To roast sweet potatoes, place them on a lined baking sheet at 400ºF until fork tender. Remove the peel and allow to cool before making the paste.
  • milk: I use non-dairy milk, but feel free to use whatever milk you have on hand.
  • sea ​​salt: A sprinkle of salt brings out the flavor of the sweet potatoes to the fullest.

Mashed Cauliflower

  • Steamed Cauliflower: Simply steam until soft (about 5-7 minutes) so the cauliflower can be easily mashed.
  • garlic: Use fresh garlic for best flavor.
  • milk: Again, whatever milk you have on hand will work. I use non-dairy products.
  • butter: Start with 2 tablespoons of grass-fed butter and add more to taste.
  • Salt and Pepper: Enhances the flavor of the paste and adds a subtle hint of heat.

How to Make Shepherd’s Pie

This easy shepherd’s pie recipe is made two ways and only takes 15 minutes of prep time!

  1. Cook vegetables: In a large skillet, heat oil and garlic until fragrant. Add the other vegetables and sauté until the onions and carrots are soft.
  2. Add beef and broth: Add ground beef to skillet and cook until browned. Add stock, salt and pepper, then reduce heat and simmer for 8-10 minutes.
  3. To make mashed sweet potatoes: Add the roasted sweet potatoes to a mixing bowl or blender. Mix or mash the skim milk and salt until smooth.
  4. To make the cauliflower puree: Steam the cauliflower until soft. Add it to a mixing bowl or blender with the other ingredients. Blend until smooth.
  5. Assemble and bake: Divide the meat mixture evenly between the two baking sheets. Top with mashed sweet potato and another with mashed cauliflower. Bake for 10 minutes, then 5-8 minutes until golden brown.

Tips and Precautions

  • Remove the skin from the sweet potatoes. If you leave it on, the mashed potatoes won’t be as creamy. It is easy to peel off after baking. Just be careful. It will be very hot!
  • Want to make Mashed Cauliflower Paleo Friendly? Use ghee instead of butter.
  • custom made. Feel free to add other vegetables or use other meats if you like.
  • Make it tacky. Add a layer of your favorite shredded cheese to make it even more comforting.

  • Make it vegan. Feel free to omit the meat and increase the vegetable mix to keep this meal vegetarian.

how to store

Leftover shepherd’s pie will keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

To reheat, if frozen, thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then reheat in the oven until fully heated through.

  • 1 tablespoon Extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves minced

  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 pound Grass Fed Ground Beef
  • 1/2 cup Organic Beef or Chicken Broth
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea ​​salt more flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon big chili more flavors

mashed sweet potato

  • 2 big sweet potato Roast until fork tender and skin is removed
  • 1/4 cup non milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea ​​salt more flavors

Mashed Cauliflower

  • 1 head cauliflower roughly chopped
  • 2 clove garlic broken
  • 1/4 cup non milk add more as needed
  • 2 tablespoon grass fed butter more flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea ​​salt more flavors
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper powder more flavors
  • In a large cast iron skillet, heat oil and garlic over medium-high heat until fragrant, about a minute.

  • Add onions, mushrooms, carrots and frozen peas. Saute over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until the onions are translucent and the carrots begin to soften.

  • Add the ground beef and cook over medium-high heat until brown and no longer pink. Stir frequently.

  • Add beef or chicken broth, sea salt, and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 8-10 minutes. Take off heat and set aside.

  • Add the roasted sweet potatoes to a medium mixing bowl or high-speed blender. If using a mixing bowl, mash the sweet potatoes before adding the other ingredients. If using a high-speed blender, add all sweet potato mash ingredients at once and blend until smooth.

  • Steam cauliflower until soft, about 5-7 minutes.

  • Place cauliflower and remaining cauliflower puree ingredients in a medium mixing bowl or high-speed blender. Mash or blend until smooth. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • Divide beef mixture between two similar sized cast iron skillets. Serve mashed sweet potatoes on one cast iron skillet and mashed cauliflower on the other.

  • Bake for 10 minutes, then broil on high for 5-8 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

  • Served warm!

For the mashed sweet potatoes: Roast the sweet potatoes on a lined baking sheet at 400°F for 45-50 minutes, or until fork tender. Once soft, set aside to cool before making the sweet potato mash.
Add ghee to the cauliflower puree to make it paleo friendly!
