The legal minimum wage for farm workers is about 10 euros per hour.
Singh was rescued by the police on March 17, 2017 after seeking help from a local Indian community leader and an Italian rights activist through Facebook and WhatsApp.
Officials found him living in a caravan without gas, hot water or electricity, eating leftovers that his boss threw in the trash can or fed chickens and pigs.
Singh had to take a bath in the stable. He used the same hose as the hose he used to clean the cow. He knew he shouldn’t complain.
“When I found a lawyer who was going to help me, (the owner) told me…’I will kill you, I will dig a hole, throw you in, and fill it up’… …He has a gun, I saw it,” he recalled.
Singh said he was beaten several times and his identity documents were taken away.
His former employer is now on trial for exploiting labor, while Singh lives in a secret location for fear of retaliation.
