Ingredients and Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for your pulled pork slow cooker recipe, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements see Recipe card below.
- Boneless Pork Shoulder – The best cut of meat for pulled pork is pork shoulder roast because it has the ideal fat content to keep it nice and juicy, and becomes very tender when slow cooked. I prefer boneless because it’s less messy, but you can use bone-in and shred and remove the bones. You can also use pork butt (Boston butt). I recommend trimming off any excess fat so it will be easier to handle the final shreds later.Don't delete all fat, but keep just a little bit to keep the meat juicy.
- spices – This Pulled Pork Pot Recipe combines smoked paprikasea salt, garlic powder, cuminand chili for best flavor. You can also substitute black pepper for cayenne pepper if you prefer.
- olive oil – or avocado oil.
- onion – I used white onions, but you can also use yellow onions.
- stock – Bone broth will give your pork a rich, rich flavor, but you can also use regular beef or chicken broth. For convenience I used store bought but you can do Homemade Bone Broth if you prefer.
- apple cider vinegar – Gives the sauce a nice flavor and also acts as a tenderizer. You can substitute other vinegar if you prefer.
- coconut amino acids – this soy sauce substitutes Adds a hint of sweetness and rich flavor. If you can tolerate soy, you can also use soy sauce. Worcestershire sauce will produce a similar flavor, but with more sugar.
- blackstrap molasses – This is optional, but helps impart sweetness and aroma to the slow cooker pulled pork. Some people like to add a little brown sugar, but molasses delivers all the flavor with less sugar.
Variations: Add liquid smoke for a smoky flavor!
If you like a smoky flavor, add a tablespoon liquid smoke. This is optional and not in the ingredient list, but I think it makes the best pot pulled pork!
