Fair compensation
The announcement drew an angry response from South Korean artists and creators. Online novelists and online comic artists accused Google of “abusing power” and running a fierce campaign for the new law.
The head of the Korean Web Comic Industry Association and web comic artist Xu Fangang told AFP: “Without this law, our working environment-the guarantee that creators’ efforts are fully rewarded-would be destroyed.”
“We need this law to protect the diversity of our industry. Artists and creators of all economic backgrounds can share their content here without worrying about commissions.”
Apple and Google insist that collecting commissions is the industry’s standard and fair compensation for establishing a secure market, in which developers can reach people from all over the world.
Before the debate, Apple told AFP that this would expose digital buyers to the risk of fraud, undermine their privacy protections, and make parental controls less effective.
