Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best spinach puree ingredients, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- spinach – You can use 10 ounces of frozen spinach or 1 pound of fresh chopped spinach. If using fresh, blanch in boiling water for 30-45 seconds, cool in ice water, and drain before using. (Alternatively, you can use the remaining Fried Spinach If you have any on hand. )
- Sour Cream and Mayonnaise – This spinach dip recipe uses equal parts sour cream and mayonnaise, but you can use more of one or the other if you prefer one or the other.I use homemade mayonnaise, but store-bought works great. If you prefer, you can substitute Greek yogurt for the sour cream for a lighter version without compromising the flavor or creaminess.
- cream cheese – You can use normal or tinted colors. Make sure it softens at room temperature so it will be easier to mix with the other ingredients.
- grated Parmesan cheese – You can also try Romano, Asiago or Italian cheese blends.
- garlic – I use fresh minced garlic, but 1 tsp canned garlic For convenience, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder can be used.
- mozzarella cheese – Buy chopped or freshly chopped spinach for this recipe. Other good shredded cheeses to melt on top include cheddar, Gruyere, Swiss, Monterey Jack, and even blends of these cheeses.
- sea salt and black pepper

- Add garlic, spinach, Parmesan, salt and pepper. Fold or stir well to combine.

- Bake the spinach puree until golden brown. Place in the oven and bake until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese is melted and browned. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Spinach Dip Variations
Want to change it? Here are some additions and changes you can make to your spinach puree:
- bacon – Place 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon in mixing bowl. For this you can cook bacon in the ovenQuickly microwave baconmaking Air Fryer Baconor take a shortcut and use store-bought bacon cubes.
- sun dried tomatoes – add 1/4 cup sun dried tomatoes Flavor bursts.
- mushroom – If you like spinach and mushrooms, add 1/2 cup fried mushrooms.
- artichoke – do mine Spinach Artichoke recipe here.
- cold – Combine ingredients in a bowl, transfer to a bowl or container, and skip the cheese on top. Chill in the refrigerator and serve.
storage instructions
- shop: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
- Reheat: You can reheat the spinach puree in the microwave or bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until warm. It’s also delicious cold!
- freeze: The main ingredients of this dish – mayonnaise and sour cream – are not very freezer friendly, so I generally don’t recommend freezing it. You can freeze it (up to 3 months) if you really want to, but it may turn watery or grainy when thawed. If you decide to give it a try, thaw overnight in the fridge, stir well, and add some extra fresh mayonnaise and sour cream before reheating, which will help bring back the texture of the creamy spinach sauce.

What to Serve with Spinach Dip
This Easy Spinach Dip is the perfect appetizer for any occasion! Pita chips, sliced baguette, sourdough bread, or bread bowls are all popular choices, but I prefer these healthier options:
- potato chips – My favorite is tortilla chips, pictured above, but I also make Low Carb Nachos Usually for an easier option. However, any chip that fits your lifestyle will do.You can even choose zucchini slices Or other vegetable chips!
- vegetable – Fresh carrot sticks, celery, broccoli, or green peppers all make delicious, healthy dips for cold or warm spinach dip.
