Student Spotlight: Fia Hoque

Fia Hoque is currently studying for a master’s degree Sustainable Development Science (SUSC) plan. She was born and raised in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She moved to the United States in 2016 and completed a Bachelor of Chemistry from the University of Washington. She is particularly interested in data analysis and management, with the ultimate goal of helping companies and non-profit organizations adapt to more sustainable practices and participate in global climate change.

In addition to academics, Fia also likes to travel and has been to more than 20 countries. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, trying new foods, and exploring various forms of music and art.

What attracted you to apply for the SUSC program?

The program perfectly integrates scientific innovation, technical skills and practical courses, which are all necessary to become a sustainable development professional-my ideal career. Some of the main factors that attracted me to join the SUSC program are cutting-edge scientific methods and tools, the application of interdisciplinary scientific research and comprehensive educational styles, and an environment that includes a diverse network of professionals.

What are some of the highlights of your SUSC program?

In addition to my courses, I also joined the Resilient Science Excellence League (RESCUE) club at Columbia University, where I met some great people and got some great experiences!

What is your favorite course or professor so far?

SUSC PS5130 improves health through environmental measurement in water and soil, taught by Dr. Lex van Geen.

What is your professional ambition? How does being part of a sustainable science program affect these desires?

I aspire to be a sustainability professional. I hope to apply new technologies and scientific methods to mitigate and monitor climate impacts around the world. I want to help private and public companies implement more sustainable solutions.
