Is Keto Keto?
Traditional store bought ketchup is not keto. It’s made with added sugar, or even worse, high fructose corn syrup. There are some sugar-free ketchup brands, but most use artificial sweeteners such as Sucralose.
Fortunately, there are still ways to enjoy keto and avoid sugar on a low-carb diet. Just use my homemade sugar-free tomato sauce recipe!
The key to making low carb ketchup or tomato sauce is really just the sweetener.I don’t use sugar or syrup Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blendit dissolves easily and ensures that the tomato sauce is smooth and not grainy.
In fact, it tasted so much like the real deal, I included it in my Easy Keto Carboholics Recipeand several other delicious sauces and spreads.
Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for the best sugar-free tomato sauce, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
- ketchup – Adds classic ketchup flavor. If you don’t have any on hand, you can simmer the tomato sauce until it becomes a paste.
- water
- Besti Powdered Monk Fruit Allulose Blend – Some sugar substitute Works better than others, this is my most recommended. Other sweeteners may crystallize or not dissolve completely, resulting in a rough texture. If you prefer, you can use a concentrated liquid sweetener such as Liquid Monk Fruit Extract or Steviabut keep in mind that these have aftertaste, you need to use a lot of less.
- white vinegar – using apple cider vinegar to make this homemade tomato sauce paleo friendly.
- spices – To make this ketchup taste similar to Heinz, you need sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, chili, clove powderand mustard powder.
How to Make Sugar-Free Tomato Sauce
This section shows how to make tomato sauce, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique to help you visualize it.For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see recipe card below.
- combined. Stir all ingredients into small panuntil smooth.
- simmer. Gently bubble over low heat, covered, until the unsweetened tomato sauce thickens (reduces) to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally while cooking. Taste, and adjust salt and sweetener as needed.
- mix. For the best tomato sauce that is silky smooth, transfer the mixture to a high-powder blender (this is my favorite) and puree. This step isn’t required, but I highly recommend it to get the smoothest texture most similar to the tomato sauce you’re probably used to.
Tip: Simmering times will vary.
Depending on the size of the pan and the temperature of the stove, the time can vary greatly. Larger pans require less time.
storage instructions
- shop: Store tomato paste in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks. If separation occurs, give it a stir and it will return to normal.
- freeze: Pour into an airtight container or freezer bag and store in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.
