Ingredients and Substitutes
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for this Chicken Thai with Basil recipe, what each ingredient does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see recipe card below.
Sauce:
Many Thai Basil Chicken recipes use oyster sauce to create sweet, savory, and savory flavors, but I opted for a clean-ingredient sauce with no refined sugar:
- fish sauce – Gives a savory flavor to the sauce. There is nothing quite like it, but the closest substitute is a mixture of fish sauce Mix with coconut aminos, soy sauce or soy sauce.
- coconut aminos – Adds salty, umami and slightly sweet flavors.this is my first choice soy sauce substitutebut you can also substitute low-sodium soy sauce.
- Honey – Naturally sweetened.I usually use unsweetened honeybut regular also works.
Thai Basil Chicken:
- olive oil – Oil is needed for frying chicken and vegetables. Some recipes use vegetable oil, but I prefer to be healthy olive oil. You can use avocado oil, coconut oil, or any heat-resistant cooking oil.
- chicken – I used boneless skinless chicken thighs cut into very small pieces, but you can also substitute boneless skinless chicken breasts for this Thai Basil Chicken recipe. Either way, cut the chicken into very small pieces. Alternatively, you can use ground chicken instead.
- vegetable – including bell peppers and onions. I used green peppers and yellow onions, but almost any kind will work. You can also substitute shallots for onions.
- Thai Chili – These peppers are known for being very hot, ranging from medium to very hot. To make this Thai dish less spicy, you can substitute milder chiles such as jalapeños (mildest, but still hot) or serrano peppers (hotter, but not as intense as Thai chilies).
- garlic – I use fresh minced garlic for the best flavor, but you can also use 2 tsp canned garlic If you prefer. You can also substitute 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder if you must.
- Thai basil leaves – Unlike regular sweet basil, Thai basil has a spicy, aniseed (licorice-like) taste. If you can’t find it, regular basil will work too, but the flavor will vary.
- sea salt
Variations: Add other veggies!
For more texture and variety, try using other vegetables such as peas, carrots, broccoli, mushrooms, zucchini, or baby corn.
