What is an Espresso Martini?
An espresso martini is a mixture of vodka, coffee liqueur and fresh espresso, shaken and served chilled with coffee beans sprinkled on top. This is the perfect cocktail for coffee lovers!

Espresso Martini Ingredients
- Vanilla Vodka: I love using vanilla vodka to add a little extra sweetness and flavor!Feel free to use neat vodka if you like, or drizzle to make your straight vodka a little sweeter simple syrup.
- Kalua: Classic coffee liqueur for espresso martinis. If you can't find Kahlúa, you can use another type of coffee liqueur, such as Tia Maria.
- Strong coffee: Use freshly brewed espresso for the best flavor and texture.
- ice: Make sure your cocktails are delicious and ice-cold.
- Coffee beans: In Italy, the traditional espresso martini is garnished with three whole coffee beans! These are optional but do make for a great presentation.
How to Make an Espresso Martini
- Prepare glass and espresso: First, place the glass in the freezer or add some ice cubes and let it cool for a few minutes. Make a cup of espresso.
- Combine and shake well: Add ice to a martini pitcher and pour all ingredients over the ice.Close the lid tightly and shake well a lot of.
- Strain and serve: Discard the ice from the glass and strain the drink into a chilled glass. Garnish with coffee beans and serve immediately.

What liquor is best for an espresso martini?
The traditional mix for an espresso martini is a mixture of vodka and coffee liqueur (usually coffee liqueur).
For this recipe, I use both vodka and Kahlua, but I like to use vanilla vodka instead of regular vodka to make it sweeter!
Do you need to chill your espresso?
It's up to you! You absolutely can if you want to – and some recipes suggest you do – but I don't think it's necessary.I just threw the hot espresso in with the rest of the ingredients and gave it a try real Shake well with ice and serve. The cocktail is served at just the right temperature, no extra steps required!
Who has time to wait? Not freezing your espresso just means you can enjoy your drink faster!
What makes an espresso martini bubbly?
The key to a delicious frothy topping is machine-brewed espresso. There is a layer of foam on top of the espresso shot, also called “crema,” which plays an important role in the foam of the espresso martini.
In a pinch, you can use strong coffee instead of espresso. Your martini may not be as frothy, but it still tastes good.
I do not recommend using instant coffee.

Bubble tip!
While the crema in espresso does play an important role in the foam of the cocktail, it also Very important Shake well. This will make it extra frothy, creamy, and delicious!
Can I make a batch of espresso martinis?
I don't recommend it. It's hard to achieve that classic frothy top with a batched espresso martini. For the best texture, I recommend mixing only one, maybe two, at a time.
Luckily, they don’t take long to make, so you can easily make several in just a few minutes!
Tips and Notes
- Cool the glass. A chilled glass is a great way to take your cocktail to the next level and help it stay cold longer. You can cool the glass by adding ice cubes and letting it sit for a few minutes. You can also place the glass in the refrigerator for a few minutes to cool.
- Serve immediately. Once the cocktail is nice and frothy in the shaker, quickly pour it into your glass and enjoy immediately. This ensures you get the best possible texture!
- customized! This recipe is a good guide, but feel free to adjust the amounts to make this cocktail the perfect one for you!

Variety
- Make it caffeine-free. Use your favorite decaf espresso!
- Not vanilla vodka? You can use regular vodka and sweeten with the optional 1/2 oz. simple syrup.
