Every August 16th, Roller Coaster Day is celebrated across the United States to celebrate these fun and exciting rides.
Although this day is to pay tribute to Edwin Prescott who obtained the first vertical ring roller coaster patent in 1898, it is believed that the oldest rides originated in Russia. These specially constructed icebergs built in the 17th century are located near St. Petersburg, Russia, and are between 70 and 80 feet in height. The rider faces a 50-degree drop, and wooden supports provide reinforcement.
In modern times, roller coaster designs have existed since at least 1872. One of the earliest patent holders was JG Taylor, who called his creation a “tilted railroad.” He rides at Rocky Point, Rhode Island. It extended 400 feet and carried 9 passengers.
Richard Knudsen also obtained another patent for his model in 1878. However, Prescott improved these structures and built prototypes of the models we see today.
