I’ve read several of Matt Haig’s books, and I’ve always loved his stories. I’ve heard a lot of hype about The Midnight Library, and while I’m a little late to the party, I just finished reading it.
Here’s more information about the book.
Introduction
Life goes from bad to worse for Nora. Then, as the clock struck midnight on her last day on Earth, she found herself led into a library. There, she’s given the chance to undo her regrets and try out other lives she might have had.
This raises the ultimate question: With limitless options, what is the best way to live?
my thoughts
The protagonist Nora feels that she has exhausted all means to live a happy life. In desperation, she chooses to commit suicide to end it all.
This storyline largely deals with depression and living with regrets, so it can be very triggering. Having said that, it does teach us through the plot that happiness can be found in the smallest things if we just go easy on ourselves.
Basically, Nora is in a state of flux in this strange realm that was specifically designed for her to reflect on her own life decisions. Should she feel deep remorse when she found out where she was wrong? Or should she be kinder to herself and chalk it up to the experience?
She revisits these points in her life through the books in her library, and we follow her on a journey of self-discovery.
While it’s not something I would normally read, I enjoyed The Midnight Library. I think we can all learn something from this book. Don’t let the path you choose initially determine your future.
Things happen, people change, and life goes on. Live and enjoy now!
