Exaggerated numbers
For months, Pentagon officials have insisted that what they say is the superiority of the Afghan army in terms of numbers — there are said to be 300,000 troops and police — more than Taliban, The estimated number is about 70,000.
But according to the anti-terrorism center of the famous American Military Academy in West Point, New York, the number of these troops has been greatly exaggerated.
As of July 2020, according to its estimates, these 300,000 people include only 185,000 military or special operations units controlled by the Ministry of National Defense, and the rest are composed of police and other security personnel.
West Point Military Academy analysts say that only 60% of the Afghan army is well-trained fighters.
They concluded that if 8,000 Air Force personnel are excluded, a more accurate estimate of the military’s combat effectiveness is 96,000.
The SIGAR report stated that deserters have always been a problem facing the Afghan army.
