The fashion of the 2000s seems to return in the summer of 2021, because the trend-setting Gen Z has mastered some styles of clothing.
Social media is flooded with young people swinging Y2K fashion doll shirts, jumpsuits, mini skirts, low-rise flared jeans and beaded necklaces, with colorful stripes in their hair.
Many well-known celebrities have also followed this trend. This has led to a significant increase in the relative importance of saving clothes to find these styles.
Frugality has become a way for this generation to pursue fashion, but at the same time it has also got rid of “fast fashion” and appreciates the reuse of clothing. Environmental awareness is also very popular among Gen Z.
Part of the reason why Y2K has returned so strongly is the return of the main characters of this era. Britney Spears and Paris Hilton have recently regained attention.
Emma Rogue, the owner of Rogue near New York’s Lower East Side, attributed the success of Y2K products and this fashion to the return of these stars.
“So I think the free Britney Movement and Paris’s documentary about Provo put them in the center of attention again, and Gen Z may not necessarily grow up with them in the same way as a generation older than me. They. So obviously, there will be some kind of curiosity and desire to figure out what Britney and Paris looked like when they were young. So they will do this through fashion,” Rogge said NBC News.
Depop and Poshmark are two apparel resale apps. Because of this trend, they have gained the most revenue in the past year, with millions of users flocking to these sites.
