The Rolling Stones drummer was treated for throat cancer in 2004 and died in a London hospital on Monday at the age of 80, surrounded by his relatives.His representative confirmed the news with a statement issued by the Rolling Stones Twitter account Tuesday.
The statement read: “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved Charlie Watts.” “He passed away peacefully in a London hospital with his family earlier today.”
The statement continued, “Charlie is a respected husband, father, and grandfather, and a member of the Rolling Stones. He is one of the greatest drummers of his generation. We implore the privacy of his family, band members and close friends. This difficult time.”
