The suspect allegedly shot and killed Indiana detective Greg Ferency without warning: FBI

A suspected gunman who shot and killed a police detective in western Indiana shot the detective without warning in an ambush, according to the agent who oversaw the case. FBIIndianapolis office. The agent added that the suspect had been hospitalized and was in federal custody.

The shooting on Wednesday killed Terre Haute detective Greg Ferency, a 30-year department veteran and federal task force officer since 2010.

Agent Paul Keenan said the suspect was shot and killed by an FBI agent in the office when he heard the gunshots. The suspect then drove to the hospital for surgery.

“The suspect appeared there before Detective Ferenci walked out of the building,” Kenan said. “That’s why we use this word.”

FBI officials said Thursday that investigators have not yet determined the motive for ambushing a police officer outside the FBI office in western Indiana.

Keenan would not say whether Ferency knew the shooter or became a target for some reason.

Keenan said at a press conference in Terre Haute, about 70 miles (113 kilometers) west of Indianapolis: “We are still looking for motivation, and at this time we will keep all roads unimpeded.”

Keenan said federal charges against the suspected gunman were “imminent” and his identity was not disclosed until then.

On Wednesday night, a hearse containing Ferency’s body was transferred to the hospital for an autopsy. Dozens of police vehicles from multiple departments joined the parade passing the Terre Haute police headquarters.

Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen said Ferency is the father of two adult children. Ferency’s police experience includes conducting drug and human trafficking investigations and providing violence risk assessments for churches.

“He is absolutely dedicated,” Keane said. “He is not 110% invested in anything he does.”

Ferency is the third Terre Haute police officer to be shot dead in the past ten years. Officer Brent Long was killed in 2011, and Officer Robert Pitts died in 2018-both of them occurred during shootings that occurred when they and other officers were trying to arrest. The authorities determined that both gunmen died of self-inflicted injuries.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb called Ferency’s shooting “pointless.”

Holcomb said in a statement: “We are heartbroken for the family, relatives of Detective Greg Ferency, and those who work with him every day to protect the residents of the Wabash Valley.”
