The police caught up with Markum and asked him and witnesses about an incident that occurred when a black woman and a Jewish woman expressed support for the school district’s potential mask authorization.
After the meeting, Embekka Roberson, Director of Birmingham Public Schools, issued a statement to the school Metro Times Represents the school district.
“Birmingham Public Schools strongly condemns and will not tolerate any racism, disrespect, violence, and/or unfair treatment of anyone, including behavior and statements at Board of Education meetings,” Robertson said.
Robertson continued: “When people have strong feelings about something and their emotions are high, we most need to set an appropriate role model for our students.” “Last night’s meeting did not consistently demonstrate our importance to students and the community. Expectations.”
At the school meeting on August 18, anti-masks booed and insulted board members and speakers who supported wearing masks and face shields in the 2021-2022 school year.
Various anti-masks also told the board members that masks are dangerous and children will not be at risk of spreading COVID-19. The local parent, Nicole Humphrey, told the school board that she took her daughter from the school district because she did not want her daughter to be potentially entrusted.
“It is unreasonable to hear that the only way for her to participate in face-to-face learning is to wear a mask,” she told the board. “This won’t happen. It’s like asking us to deliberately send her to a place where she is abusive, and then say,’Oh, okay.’ No.”
Another parent told the school board that “God does not intend to let us wear masks” and the children should not be restrained.
“Our children will never see the freedom we enjoy as we grow up,” she said. “They can’t even breathe fresh air freely. If God wants us to cover our mouths and noses, He will let us do that.”
