TIDCO and GE to establish Centre of Excellence for Aeronautical Research in Tamil Nadu


  • TIDCO and GE are proposing to invest around Rs 141.26 crore over five years.
  • The Center of Excellence will be dedicated to research and development of new technologies for additive manufacturing.

GE Aviation, a global leader in aircraft engine and technology development, has partnered with Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Emerging Technologies. The CoE is managed by TIDCO’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), which aims to create an ecosystem of advanced R&D using additive technology.

The CoE follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations in 2021. It is proposed that TIDCO and GE will invest about Rs 1,412.6 crore in two phases over five years.

The CoE will focus on the technical development of aero-engine components such as compressor heat exchangers, combustor components, casings, frames, gears and splines. It will also undertake projects to develop predictive analytics solutions for Additive Manufacturing (AM) for Industry 4.0. The objective of the CoE is to develop Indian intellectual property for AM technologies, including materials, machines, design software, to provide specific technological solutions.

Krishnamoorthy, IOFS, TIDCO Additional Secretary and Program Director Said: “GE’s partnership with the Tamil Nadu government is an important milestone in the development of the state’s aerospace and defense ecosystem. With the establishment of this facility, Tamil Nadu will become a major player in aerospace and defense aviation. A hub for component R&D and advanced manufacturing. The partnership with GE will help attract defense and aerospace investments to the state.

Vikram Reddy, General Manager of GE Aviation Engineering said, “GE will bring its 100 years of rich aerospace experience to this CoE. The CoE can leverage GE’s technology and research capabilities in an agile environment. GE’s team will be supported by its Bengaluru-based India Technology Center team that is committed to Over 20 years in the design and development of aerospace technology.”

Recently, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology of India launched a National Strategy for Additive Manufacturing (AM) to encourage collaboration between government, industry and academia with the goal of making India a global hub for the design, development and deployment of 3D printing .

Additive Manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a manufacturing technology whose applications are rapidly increasing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and healthcare. Unlike traditional manufacturing, additive manufacturing enables complex designs without additional cost burden. It offers unprecedented degrees of geometric freedom, so not only can major design innovations be achieved, but several disparate parts can be assembled into a single unit.
