Twitter will end support for TweetDeck for Mac on July 1, when it will only be accessible through a web browser.
Users of TweetDeck for Mac will be alerted about this change when they open the app today.
A message appears at the top of the screen:
“TweetDeck for Mac is saying goodbye. Starting July 1st, the TweetDeck for Mac application will be removed. You can continue to access TweetDeck on the web. “
The decision to remove TweetDeck for Mac comes a year after it received a major upgrade, bringing it on par with the web app.
Few details were provided behind the decision. Maybe the app has become too heavy to maintain, or its user base isn’t meeting the company’s expectations.
We know this marks the end of what was once a must-have app for every social media manager with a MacBook.
Here’s more about why Twitter is shutting down TweetDeck for Mac, and what alternatives people can use.
Why is TweetDeck for Mac shutting down?
In an announcement on Twitter, the TweetDeck team said that shutting down the Mac app would allow them to devote more resources to improving the web-based version.
We’re saying goodbye to TweetDeck’s Mac app, focusing on making TweetDeck even better and testing our new preview. July 1st is the last day it will be available.
You can still use TweetDeck on the web, and more invitations to try out previews will follow in the coming months!

After July 1, TweetDeck will no longer have apps of any kind.
When TweetDeck was owned and operated by an independent company, it used to have apps for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.
The mobile apps shut down in 2013, two years after TweetDeck was acquired by Twitter. The Windows application was subsequently shut down in 2016.
TweetDeck for Mac has been around the longest, probably due to its loyal fan base, but it’s here too.
community response
TweetDeck has a loyal user base who are not happy to see one of their favorite tools disappear.
When it launched more than a decade ago, TweetDeck was one of the first applications to allow Twitter users to create custom columns, allowing multiple feeds to be monitored simultaneously.
This makes TweetDeck an indispensable tool for social media professionals and avid Twitter users alike.
TweetDeck is still a much-loved desktop app, and it’s surprising it’s been shut down.
Long-time users aren’t thrilled with the idea of having to use a web-based version:
Twitter decides to kill #Tweetdeck App for Mac. I can’t explain how disruptive this is to the work I do and the way I work. Change is constant, but web-based Tweetdeck isn’t quite as powerful as an app. It ruins the way I use Safari. Very disappointed, @Twitter.

It doesn’t make any sense, like NONE. The Mac is showing its fastest growth, but more to come, and after years of no action to keep Tweetdeck alive, are you killing it? like now? 🤯 https://t.co/rN9SEtWFIm

What are the alternatives to TweetDeck for Mac?
Twitter has certain restrictions on third-party developers using its API, so it is impossible to develop another application with the same feature set.
There are many Twitter apps available on the Mac App Store, but none is a true 1:1 replacement for TweetDeck.
You can choose to turn TweetDeck.com into a Mac application. This can be done with an app like this body fluidwhich is free to download.
It’s very easy to use and can turn any website into a Mac app. Just enter a URL and click the Create button.
While not a perfect solution, it will be the closest thing to a TweetDeck Mac app when the native app is removed.
