US chocolate giant opens research centre in Malaysia

The US-based Hershey Company, the world’s fifth-largest chocolate and confectionary manufacturer, has opened a new research and development (R&D) center in Malaysia to develop new products for regional and global markets. This is an extension of the Hershey Johor facility, the second largest in Hershey’s global manufacturing network.

Located in Johor, the southernmost state of the Malay Peninsula, the new facility will be one of Hershey’s largest R&D facilities outside the United States for “rapid development, testing and introduction of new products” to suit the tastes of consumers in the region and beyond , the company said in a statement.

According to Hershey, the 10,400-square-foot facility is a “significant investment” in the Malaysian market and features an R&D lab, packaging development facility and sensory area.

Development of new “iconic products”

“This will allow the company to work with a variety of innovation teams to taste-test and shortlist iconic products that consumers around the world know and love,” said Herjit Bhalla, vice president of Hershey’s India and Asia Pacific, EMEA, and the Malaysian factory. Becoming a “central hub” for the company’s operations in its region “reflects our continued commitment to understanding consumer preferences across the market.”

Philippe Zehnder, senior director of international research and development at Hershey, added: “The new facility will allow our talented team to conceptualize, test and develop some of the most innovative products across the region, providing a deeper understanding of consumers.”
