The majestic Vijaya Vilas Palace, the summer residence of the Maharao of Kutch, is located just a 20-minute drive (approximately 9 km) from the pristine shores of White Sands Bay. Among the emerald green trees. My three-night stay at Baishawan included a visit to this historical gem, making it the highlight of the second day. Accompanied by other travelers (who are the kindest people, they even brought me delicious Kutchhi Dabeli on the way!) and led by our friendly guide, we began our palace adventure. There was much anticipation as we walked through this charming town until we finally entered the estate. Towering trees formed a verdant canopy, whispering that the architectural wonders awaited us. Setting foot on the vast land, we knew we were about to explore the grandeur of Vijaya Vilas.
Just a five-minute walk beyond the lush gardens reveals a majestic architectural gem that will captivate any visitor at first glance. Standing proudly on the Mandvi Beach in Kutch, Gujarat, the Vijay Vilas Palace is steeped in history. It was built between 1920 and 1929, during the reign of Maharao Shri Khengarji III of Kutch, and was the successor to the throne, Yuvraj Shri Vijayaraj Vijayaraji's summer resort. The palace takes its name from the beloved prince and is proof of the royal lineage.

The palace houses a touching tribute to the Chhatri of Vijayaraji, the beloved prince from whom the palace takes its name. Sadly, he died in 1948, leaving behind this architectural legacy. For those seeking exclusive beachfront accommodation, Vijaya Vilas offers luxurious air-conditioned tent accommodation on its private beach, guaranteeing an unforgettable experience. Interestingly, the royal family of Kutch State, which once used the palace only as a summer retreat, now resides here permanently, adding a touch of history and heritage to the estate.

Made of red sandstone, Vijay Vilas Palace embodies the essence of Rajput architecture. Drawing inspiration from the Orchha and Datiya palaces, it has a majestic central dome set on towering pillars flanked by elegant Bengal domes. Sunlight pours through intricate stained glass windows, casting kaleidoscopic patterns on intricately carved “jalis” (exquisite stone lattice screens). Domed bastions stand at each corner, forming an inviting extended porch. Every inch of the palace, from the grand facade to the exquisite stone carvings, is a testament to the artistry of the era.

The palace walls resounded with a symphony of exquisite craftsmanship. The front is decorated with intricate jalis, delicate jharokas and elegant chhatris, each stroke of which is made by the skilled hands of Jaipur, Rajasthan, Bengal and Saurashtra. Kutch’s local mistris and sutars add their unique flourishes, resulting in a mesmerizing fusion of regional styles. This harmonious blend is reflected in the intricate frescoes, intricate stone carvings, and vibrant stained glass that adorns the doors and windows. Standing on the top of the palace, you have an unobstructed view. Stepping onto the balcony, your eyes scanned the surrounding scenery. Lush greenery stretches to the horizon and the sparkling sea sparkles. The cool ocean breeze flows through the delicate small windows, giving a sense of openness and connection to nature.

Vijay Vilas Palace is an architectural gem spread over 450 acres. It was once the summer haven of the Kachmahalo people and now stands as a testament to their glory. Its majestic appearance blends Indian and European influences, with exquisite stone carvings that draw the eye from afar. Outside the palace walls lies a unique treasure – a private beach located within the estate, which attracts visitors with its pristine sand and peaceful atmosphere. The palace also houses a museum.
Step back in time to the oceanfront tented resort offered by the Prince family. This unique accommodation is located within the palace estate, giving it the feel of a royal guest camp. Picture yourself sleeping in a luxurious tent decorated with British colonial-style wooden furniture, equipped with a modern bathroom and a private terrace for stargazing. Wake up to stunning views of the endless ocean unfolding in front of you from the open thatched-roof restaurant. At sunset, enjoy a charming beachside barbecue under the open sky. Feel the sand between your toes as you compete with friends on the volleyball court, or just relax on a lounge chair and let the gentle ocean breeze caress your skin. The shaded seating area is a peaceful haven to relax and soak in the peaceful surroundings.
The palace is set in beautifully designed gardens with flowing waterways and refreshing marble fountains, providing every visitor with an unforgettable experience.
