The company announced that the Vietnamese automaker VinFast has begun delivering its first electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) to customers in the domestic market at the end of December last year. The company plans to sell it in the United States and Europe in 2022.
This car VF e34 is an ultra-compact model with a narrow and high body, with a rounded outline designed by the Italian automotive design company Pininfarina and mainly developed in-house by VinFast’s engineering department. It uses a 110-kilowatt engine and can travel 300 kilometers on a single charge.
The car is priced at 690 million VND (30,190 USD), and comes with a ten-year warranty and a novel battery subscription service. The monthly fee is USD 62 and the mileage does not exceed 1,400 kilometers. VinFast also said that if the charging capacity is less than 70%, it will replace the lithium-ion battery pack in the VF e34.
The company is part of the Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup, which stated that as of 2021, domestic bookings for VF e34 are approximately 25,000. These customers will receive free battery rental services for the first year of ownership.
Premium SUV plans to be sold in the U.S. and Europe
The VF e34 is a C-class SUV in the BMW X1, Audi Q3, Mazda CX-5, Ford Kuga or Volkswagen Tiguan. It is the smallest in the VinFast lineup of electric vehicles, and it is not the leader in electric vehicles. The company plans to introduce foreign markets.
The United States and Europe are more willing to see the larger model VF e35-BMW X3, Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Jeep Cherokee and other high-end D-class cars, as one of the most important competitors, although not SUV, Tesla Model 3 and VF e36, this is a larger high-end E-class SUV, similar in size to Audi Q7, Lexus RX or Volkswagen Touareg.
VinFast also provides its own electric vehicle charging network in Vietnam, where customers can charge the battery for USD 0.11 per kilowatt hour. The charging fee is billed together with the battery rent.
So far, VinFast has not specified whether it will provide battery rental and charging services when it enters the European or American markets later this year as planned.
