The company said in a statement issued on October 14 that the emerging Vietnamese automaker VinFast will provide pre-orders for its electric sport utility vehicles from the United States in the first half of 2022 and will deliver them before the end of the year.
Michael Lohscheller, CEO of the company’s global division, said that these cars will be displayed at the Los Angeles Auto Show from November 19 to 28. Cars are VF e35 and VF e36 segments for the D and E markets, respectively.
Lohscheller said that the auto show will serve as an official introduction for VinFast to enter the US market.
VinFast is the automotive division of Vingroup, the largest conglomerate in Vietnam, established in 2017. It has set up an office in California and is expected to open 60 US showrooms in the US next year and enter the European market.
Compete with Tesla
The company aims to compete with competitors such as Tesla and other electric car manufacturers with lower prices and innovative service models (such as battery leasing programs and online sales).
“This is just the beginning. We hope that through VinFast’s dedicated service and smart, high-quality products, even the most discerning customers can capture their hearts and imaginations,” Vingroup vice chairman Le Thi Thu Thuy said in a statement.
Lohscheller said that although these cars will initially be produced in Vietnam, VinFast is also considering establishing a manufacturing plant in the United States and eventually plans to conduct an initial public offering there.
The sales target for 2022 is 15,000 units, which is lower than the originally envisaged 56,000 units. This revision is mainly due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips and the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
