Editor-in-Chief of The Wall Street Journal Matt Murray And editor-in-chief Karen Thought The following was sent out on Friday:
Everyone:
At the end of this week, we want to share with you the latest news about our Afghan colleagues.
For more than two decades, these reporters and other staff have been important members of the news team of the Wall Street Journal in Kabul. Their collective courage and talent indelibly strengthened our report. For this work, they face a serious threat from the Taliban, which has intensified in recent weeks.
After going through some stressful and difficult days, we can happily report that earlier this week, our 76 colleagues and their families left the country safely and were in Qatar. They are safe, full of energy, and the accommodation is very good, and we expect them to set off for another destination soon. The other four were safe during the trip.
This is a moment of deep relief and gratitude to many people at Dow Jones, who have worked tirelessly for many days to help our colleagues move towards freedom. This is indeed an extraordinary team effort that is unparalleled in our memory.
In the past few days, our colleagues and their families have experienced a lot-although they are physically safe, their ordeal is not over. Throughout the process, they showed admirable courage and resilience.
They are facing a long resettlement process and need our continuous support. We have taken steps to navigate the next stage and will share as much information as possible. But today, we celebrate their safety with gratitude and hope — and are determined to continue their journey to help them.
Matt and Karen
