Why Do Some Dogs Wear Diapers – Can Puppies Wear Diapers For Potty Training? 🐾 Puppy Tips

Needless to say, dogs are our children.

But we never thought about actually changing their diapers.

However, dog diapers exist.

but why?

Can you potty train your dog with diapers?

No, using diapers to deal with the mess when potty training a puppy is generally not recommended.

But why not?

Like babies, puppies are considered immature and do not have full bladder and bowel control.

or… Are they?

In some parts of Asia and Africa, eliminate communication This is common practice.

If you haven’t heard of Elimination Communication (EC), allow me to surprise you.

Some babies don’t wear diapers.

In many parts of the world, disposable diapers are not readily available, and there are no washing machines for reusable cloth diapers.

Instead, mothers and other caregivers wear babies most of the day.

This constant bonding allows them to hear all of your baby’s little grunts, whimpers, and whimpers.

When they sense baby needs to “go,” they take baby out of the carrier and place them on the floor, toilet, whatever. Parents hold the baby in their arms, put the baby’s knees against the chest, and make a sound like “poof” to tell the baby that it is time to pee or poo.

And, from birth, babies have control over their bladders and bowels, avoiding urinating and defecating on their parents.

However, our western babies may wear diapers for up to three years.

This is not to say that either approach is right or wrong, or that I have any particular opinion about human parenting. While EC has become popular, especially among American naturalistic-style child rearers, it may not be practical or possible for everyone.

But it shows that even human babies are capable of communicating, understanding and controlling their own bodily functions if given the chance.

My point is that puppies also need bonding, communication, and opportunities for proper elimination.

We don’t have to dress up our puppies to achieve this.

What does elimination communication have to do with puppies?

Your pup should be in the same room as you when you’re at home and under constant supervision so you can read their cues and take them outside if needed.

You can also take your puppy outside after meals, after play, and after waking up.

When you can’t supervise your puppy closely, you can place them in a crate.

When your puppy is crated, it will communicate by whining and barking, and when they need to get out, they will become restless. Crate training can be a core part of puppy potty trainingotherwise you probably wouldn’t use it that often.

For example, at night, you may prefer to have your puppy sleep in a bed rather than in a crate. If you’re a light sleeper and likely wake up when they wake up, you probably won’t be using their crate very often.

You can use tools like potty bells to help with communication. That way, instead of looking for a spot on the floor, your puppy will learn to watch you, ring the bell, or otherwise let you know when they need to pee and poo.

you can use it cord training As an alternative to crate training, keep your puppy on a leash with you so you can catch their cues quickly.

Using diapers can make the potty training process more difficult, messy, and confusing for you and your puppy. So, it’s no surprise that puppy diapers never come off.

So, why are there dog diapers?

Dog diapers are not actually designed for puppies.

They are made for three purposes:

  1. The hygiene of the female dog in heat. Female dogs come into heat approximately every six months. Dogs go into heat for about three weeks, during which time they are receptive to mating and able to conceive. They will have a bloody discharge. When a dog is in heat, it can be difficult to put her in diapers. Personally, I find it easier to cover furniture and rugs with old towels, as it’s more natural and comfortable for dogs to keep themselves clean than wearing diapers.
  2. Prevent male dogs from leaving marks. Male dogs sometimes mark their territory by raising their legs to urinate on indoor vertical surfaces. Dogs don’t mark when they have to “go,” but are triggered by new situations, stress, or insecurities. Marking can become an endless cycle, as the dog will often repeat marking locations he has already marked with his scent. A “girth” is a male dog’s diaper. It’s a good idea to keep them with you when the dog is likely to mark (for example, when guests are over or when visiting public places).
  3. Caring for an incontinent dog. Illness and disability can cause a dog to become incontinent, thus requiring diapers. Here’s something I’ve been through – my childhood dog, a Westie named Nicky, had frequent bouts of urinary incontinence after being diagnosed with brain cancer. He was prescribed steroids to help control tumor growth, which caused excessive thirst and frequent urination. However, even with his reduced mobility, diapers were difficult to keep wearing. In his final months, it was even more helpful to have puppy pads on the floor. However, for other incontinent dogs, diapers are essential to keeping them clean. Young dogs with disabilities may wear diapers for years. For older dogs, changing a diaper can be one of the last acts of love before saying goodbye.
