Sometimes when a delivery driver knocks on our door, our dog reminds us that it’s awesome and makes sense.
You grab your food before it gets cold, or scoop up your package before the nearby porch pirates stop by. The dog is nice.

If your dog sounds like it’s “barking on alert” and their fur may have been raised but you can’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary, remember that dogs have far sharper hearing than we do .
They can hear sounds four times farther than we can, and they can hear higher pitched noises.
So your dog might bark when someone knocks on your next door neighbor’s door. Or maybe there’s a squirrel crackling on the roof.
Do dogs have a sixth sense?
I would like to think that dogs are as omnipotent as dogs in fictional stories, and you are welcome to believe whatever you want, but I think we underestimate the power of their five normal, standard-issue senses.
For example, they can sense through their incredible hearing when an earthquake is imminent.
They know when someone has cancer before they even have symptoms…using their sense of smell.
Dogs can tell how we feel…because they can smell hormones like cortisol in our sweat.
However…
If there are ghosts lurking in your home, your dog may be able to detect changes related to temperature, smell, electromagnetic fields, changes in air pressure…anything is possible.
As a kid, I read something in a library book about how to use a dog to see ghosts. If you stand behind them and look between their ears, you can obviously see the soul that way.

What to do when your dog has nothing to do
When it comes to barking that seems absurd, if you’ve seen and ruled out ghosts from between your dog’s ears and looking out of windows at people and critters, and it’s not time to eat, you may never know what it is. Keep your dog on alert.
The most important thing is that you give your dog this means of communication, even if you don’t always understand it. Dogs usually stop barking once we look around and try to figure out what’s bothering them. When you’ve seen, heard, and made them totally clear, they may settle down.
