Why NAP and User Experience Matter for Local SEO

NAP conformance is an important part of Google’s Local Search and Local Pack algorithms, which means that building citations with consistent NAPs on your Google business profile and other online directories and websites can impact your local rankings.

However, having a consistent NAP is also important to the user journey, as online directories and social bookmarking sites are not only used by Google—they are also used by humans.

Maintaining a high level of consistency and accuracy reduces the risk of errors in the mechanical processing of data by search engines.

It also reduces the risk of user friction if a potential customer encounters an incorrect phone number, hours of operation, or email address when trying to contact your business.

And, if Google encounters five different versions of store hours, which one should they trust?

Conflicting information may weaken Google’s trust in your location data, which doesn’t mean your listing is considered the best result for a relevant query.

Tracking where critical business information is listed and how accurate it is is a tough job even for a single location.

When you manage multiple locations with multiple addresses and phone numbers, it becomes increasingly complex even with enterprise software.

this job is also changingnow Google wants business owners to manage their Google Business Profile (GBP) through the Google Maps interface and larger, multi-location businesses through the Business Profile Manager.

When does the user journey begin

Many people believe that the user journey and brand experience starts with a user making their first inquiry over the phone or email, or spending a lot of time on a company website.

However, the journey started faster.

Google data shows that five touchpoints This usually leads to a purchase/affirmative site action:

  • used a search engine.
  • Been to a store or other location.
  • Visited a retailer website or app.
  • Visited another website or application.
  • used a map.

The user journey begins when they first see your brand in a search results listing, local pack, map, or brick and mortar store.

This is where consistent NAP becomes important, as users need consistent information to progress on their journey.

Typically, we assume that users find our local businesses and brands through our website, our guest posts and outreach, and our Google Business Profile listings.

However, users can find our brand through a variety of online portals, including our directories where citations and listings are built.

Influence the user journey during the search phase

When a user performs their first search, it’s your first opportunity to make an impression and become part of the user journey.

If you appear prominently in local packs or SERPs, you want your users to click through to content that both provides value and satisfies their user intent.

lazy local page no one helps

In many cases, when a website is “localized”, it means the generation of local content and local pages.

These are executed with varying degrees of effort, care and detail, but in the end lazy local pages don’t help anyone.

A lazy local page is a doorway page; a thin page of little value to the user whose sole purpose is to try to rank for local search terms.

Google doesn’t like doorway pages (because they provide a bad user experience) and rolls out doorway pages”Rank Adjustment Algorithm 2015.

This 2016 Possum Update There are also ways to address poor quality and spam, but it’s an ever-present tactic. In many verticals, they still work (until something better comes along).

Google’s Official Support Document Definition doorway as:

“Sites or pages that are created for a specific search query rank highly. They are bad for users because they can lead to multiple similar pages in the user’s search results, each of which ends up taking the user to essentially the same destination … they can also direct users to intermediate pages that are less useful than the final destination.”

Even if you rewrite everything on these pages to make sure they don’t repeat, they all carry the exact same information for different cities and they don’t have any value at all.

However, it depends on the niche, and in some smaller niches, Google may still rank doorway pages for lack of competition and other viable options.

It boils down to two concepts that Google uses internally Quality Assessment Guidance Document: “the beneficial purpose of the page” and whether the page is “fit for query”.

Even if the business doesn’t satisfy the physical local aspect of the query, but provides content that it does cover the physical location and provides value (and a positive reputational value proposition) to users looking for X in Y, satisfying the physical location preference when Google is invalid Among other options, Google will rank the content.

Create good local value pages

Granted, it’s much easier for companies with brick-and-mortar stores in the locations they want to target to create high-value local pages.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t do the same for companies that offer locally-focused intangible products or services.

Google’s Search Quality Assessment Guidelines The content is defined in two parts:

  • main content.
  • Companion content.

This is how you should look at local searches.

when someone in london searches [plumbers in london]Google has to break down the query into main and supporting parts and look for intent.

it can be done by Hummingbird and RankBrain renew.

and [plumbers] as the main part of the query and view the search results page from [plumbers]Google sees a single primary interpretation of the query, that someone is looking for a plumber (service), and returns a combination of local business sites, aggregators, map packages (local to my IP), and Google’s local service carousel.

[in london] Then there are modifiers.

This is a secondary signal to Google to reinforce the accuracy of the desired results.

add this modifier for me (using [plumbers in horsforth]), Google puts more emphasis on aggregators listing multiple plumbing companies in the region, and appears to downweight individual company sites.

From a user’s perspective, this makes sense as it makes it easier for me to access multiple options with a single click instead of multiple clicks.

The main content of your website should reflect the product/service you offer, with supporting content elements adding value and topical relevance in that location.

This can be done non-commercially through blogs, guides or additional resources.

NAP conformance

As mentioned earlier, NAP consistency is important as a directory listing, and the citations we build are not just used by search engines. Potential clients will also discover these details.

Inconsistent or inaccurate NAPs can lead to user frustration and possible loss of potential customers.

Common Causes of NAP Inconsistencies

As a rule of thumb, inconsistent NAPs can be caused by a number of human errors and business changes, including:

  • Change company address without updating previously established citations, directory listings, etc.
  • Have a different store address than the company’s registered address and use both online.
  • Generate different phone numbers for attribution tracking purposes.

All of the above will not only cause problems for your local SEO, but also lead to many UX issues – poor UX can lead to lost sales and damaged branding.

The user experience extends from local packs and SERPs to your website, how the local journey is managed, and whether it satisfies all local intents.

Being able to track and accurately report on the success of a marketing campaign is critical.

However, there are instances of “over-reporting” and “over-attribution”, especially when it comes to local SEO.

Google Local Pack: User Experience and Attribution

Google’s Local Pack operates using a different algorithm than traditional organic search results and is heavily influenced by the user’s location when conducting searches.

Google Business Profiles have attribution issues, and in Google Analytics, a high number of clicks from GMB listings are often classified as direct traffic rather than organic traffic.

The solution to this problem is to use a parameter:

?utm_source=GMBlisting&utm_medium=organic

This parameter does not cause NAP/citation consistency issues, so there is nothing to worry about.

Having a consistent NAP means you’re more likely to be in the local pack if you’re in the local pack research shows You may get a high CTR on the results page.

If you are likely to get a lot of clicks, it means you will have a lot of users who expect fast page loading and prominent information to satisfy their search intent.

Directory attribution

This is a more common problem I’ve had with working proxies, and one I’ve been asked to implement when working on the client side.

To track marketing efforts, I know of some organizations that generate unique phone numbers for each directory they submit their business to.

  • advantage: You can measure the ROI of your marketing efforts fairly accurately.
  • shortcoming: You end up with a lot of published citations with inconsistent NAPs.

Additionally, many directories like to generate Google Business Profile listings as an “add-on service” based on the data you enter.

This results in multiple Google Business Profile listings for each location, with different phone numbers and sometimes different map pin locations.

This is bad for the user experience because they are faced with multiple choices in one location and only one is correct.

This can be managed by declaring a fake listing to be a duplicate of another listing and asking Google to merge them. see’How to delete or merge duplicate Google Business Profile listings‘ understand more.
