Brian believed that for X to be taken seriously as a book about experiential innovation, the book itself had to be an experience.
Because this book explores how digital and mobile are changing customer expectations and therefore the customer journey, the book is designed as an “analogy app.” It has no traditional table of contents. It is organized by contextual topics in a linear format. And, the balance of written and visual narrative reflects the experience on your favorite apps versus traditional books. Brian's inspiration was to create a book that could be read intuitively by today's digital-first high school students.
The shape of the X was created after the iPad because smartphones were too small.
X was designed by Brian in collaboration with the amazing team mechanism.
X was originally supposed to be a follow-up to Brian's second solo book with Wiley, End of business as usual. Instead, publishers felt the gaps between topics were too great.Brian wrote what the hell to bridge the gap. Brian originally intended it as an e-book only, but later used the exercise to try out a paper book as an analog application. This sets the stage for X.
