On August 24, cheerful drums sounded on the sunny square in front of New Yonglu Primary School. Also bless and bring good luck to the building.
More than 50 years ago, the school was named after the highly regarded political and community leader Wing Luke. The original school was demolished a few years ago, and a new building was built to welcome the students in the 2021 school year.
Principal Carol Mendoza presided over the ribbon-cutting ceremony and officially opened the new building, flanked by four members of the Seattle Chinese Women’s Exercise Team.
Project speakers include Melissa Pailthorp, the first principal of Seattle Schools; Brandon K. Hersey, Director of the Seventh District of the Seattle Education Bureau; Dr. Brent Jones, head of Seattle Public Schools; and Wing Luke’s sister Bettie Luke. Due to the epidemic, visiting the building is not allowed. However, you can see a guided tour by Mendoza and Assistant Principal Jeffery Case on the Wing Luke School website.
