Tamarin Salt Pans is one of the oldest salt pans in Mauritius, dating back to the 18th century. The ancestral gestures of the Sauniere still haunt the place. During the French patronage, salt was an important commodity, especially for the preservation of meat on ships, so it became an important part of Mauritian culture. Dry crystallizers can still be found in the ruins of the salt pan. These salt pans are now the only place in Mauritius where sea salt is collected traditionally and by hand in close collaboration with the local community. This series of small pebbled salt pans is located near the entrance to the Tamarin settlement, towards the foot of La Tourelle.
