YouTube offers creators another way to earn money directly from viewers with a membership giveaway that rivals the giveaway subscription service on Twitch.
This will allow viewers to purchase channel memberships for other viewers.
For viewers, it’s a way to support their favorite creators and bring something extra to their community.
The beta for channel memberships is rolling out to a small group of creators and will expand to more channels in the coming months.

YouTube channel membership gift
Monetized YouTube channels have the option to earn revenue by offering memberships to users.
Channel membership grants privileges such as special icons that appear in the creator comments section, members-only live broadcasts, and more. It’s similar to a subscription or “subscription” on the steam platform Twitch.
Before the launch of membership giveaways, users could only purchase memberships for themselves. This means that users can purchase up to one membership per month.
Through membership gifts, channel members can purchase a certain number of members [5, 10, 20] in one purchase. YouTube “gifts” these memberships to other viewers.
Viewers who receive gift memberships can enjoy your channel membership benefits for 1 month. The recipient pays nothing, and the creator receives the usual revenue share from each transaction.
How does member gifting work?

Viewers must opt in to be eligible to receive gifts on the channel. During the beta, users can opt in by clicking “Allow Gift” when prompted.
YouTube distributes gift memberships to viewers based on how many times they interact with your channel. Loyal viewers are more likely to receive gift memberships than first-time viewers.
If viewers receive gift memberships, they will receive personal live chat messages and email notifications. Gifted memberships are non-recurring and recipients incur no fees.
Is Premium Membership a boon for YouTube creators?
Given the popularity of Twitch’s gifted subscribers, membership giveaways have the potential to boost the earnings of those who stream on YouTube in significant ways.

So, membership giveaways would be an interesting option for the small group of content creators who currently make money from channel memberships. who are they? Examples include:
- Rachana Ranada, an Indian Chartered Accountant, who is helping the audience to learn more about financial literacy. She earned more than $100,00 in membership.
- Prince Occam, a game creator known as Prince Charming is using channel memberships. He offers members the opportunity to play live video games with him. He also offers live streams, videos, posts, and custom emojis.
- Anna Yakimenkoa Russian fashion consultant based in Milan, uses channel memberships to offer her viewers discounts on merchandise, exclusive live broadcasts and bespoke fashion advice.
Now, channel memberships aren’t for everyone, so relatively few content creators will be interested. But if they help keep the creator economy healthy and diverse, they should be seen as a great tool in the toolbox.
