September is a beautiful month. It can also be confusing. It is a time of change, the transition back to school, from one season into another, and from the energy of summer to the welcome of moving inward and quieting down.
We’re in full fall festival mode here in Vermont. The nights are nice and cool, the leaves are almost full and we are decorating our front steps with pumpkins and chrysanthemums. We’re ready to fully embrace sweater weather and enjoy this beautiful season in our favorite places.
Here are some of the things we tasted and loved in September.
10 things we loved about September
Five things about Jesse
Planting bulbs
We didn’t do much gardening until this summer because we had so many other priorities. We have Home Depot (our home away from home) and they have a lot of light bulbs.Always wanted to plant narcissus and tulip It blooms in autumn and spring, so I got a lot Different varieties. Who knows if they will work, but I’m excited about the prospect of early blooms come spring. Fingers crossed!
backyard dinner
Now We have finished our patio We had dinner out in the backyard almost every night. fine.We have , grilled s’mores, we’re savoring these perfect fall evening treats before dark at 4pm. There’s also plenty of fresh produce, so eating fresh, locally grown food is a real treat. The pizza was also delicious when we were too tired!
clogs
I live in these clogs last fall so when they launched Shearling-lined version I knew I needed them immediately. They are so comfortable, easy to walk in, and look great with everything. FYI, I ended up sizing up a half size and the unlined version is true to size, but I think the fleece lined version will fit a half size down (despite the product page description).
Dream Season 3
I just listened to the whole “Dream” Season 3 About the coaching industry and how it spreads online. It’s an interesting deep dive into the world of coaching and how it can be extremely unregulated and sometimes downright dangerous. Interestingly, host Jane Marie hired a coach of her own to help her and found connection and friendship in the process.
spontaneous road trip
We were so stuck in our daily routines that it was difficult to do anything spontaneously, especially with a small child and three animals at home. We decided to take a short trip up north with Craig’s parents and it was so nice to explore new places that were only a short drive away. It’s only an hour, but Vermont’s back roads are so special. We got to try new restaurants and visit towns we had never been to before. It can be difficult trying to fit these things in, but it’s worth it!
Five things about Kelly
danish wooden shoes
I’ve always been a clog kind of girl and I’m glad they’ve come back into fashion over the past few years.I love the classic Dansko and recently bought these Taupe and brown. I love the navy and polished suede too!
small and beautiful things
i started reading small and beautiful things this summer and then binge-watched the show last month. I’m a big fan of Cheryl Strayed and used to read her advice column Dear Sugar. This book brings together all the letters and responses to create such a beautiful story. It will break your heart, make you laugh, sad, cry and everything in between. I can’t say enough about this beautiful story and the wisdom, heart, and vulnerability of Cheryl Strayed. Shows on Hulu It turns out to be equally wonderful! A look at Cheryl’s tumultuous life behind the scenes of Honey Sugar, and how she uses the wisdom in her columns to cope with her struggles and heal her trauma.
Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals by Oliver Berkman
I listened Interview with Forrest Hanson by Oliver Burkeman stay healthy Earlier this month I was so fascinated by some of his theories and ideas that I immediately downloaded his audiobook, Four Thousand Weeks: Time Management for Mortals. Berkman discusses how our fear of not having enough time in this world drives us into this never-ending cycle of productivity and completing lists that actually never end. Not only does he point out these toxic patterns in our society, he also suggests helpful ways to live a more meaningful life.
Olivia Rodrigo “Guts”
Olivia Rodrigo is one of my sins and I’ve been listening to her new album GUTS repeat. It’s a great teenage angst flashback, perfect for shouting out in the car. Some of the songs are a little too pop-rock for me, but I like the slower songs: Logical, Lace, and Make the Bed. Enjoy the nostalgia!
abnormal
Last month I led a yoga workshop with a group called Shapeshifting. It’s so lovely to meet up with a small group of ladies every Monday morning after a chaotic weekend and after school and take the time to be part of our bodies in such an intentional way. The series is based on the metamorphosis of a butterfly, which goes through stages of growth, transformation and freedom. We did some journaling, moved our bodies, and created goals for this new season. I’m excited to lead more themed series like this in the coming months! Plus, it’s so fun to have Jesse in on it too 🙂
