Lightning struck a wedding venue in Bangladesh.
Officials said that on Wednesday, lightning struck a wedding party on a ship in northwestern Bangladesh, killing at least 17 people and injuring a dozen others.
Police officer Farid Hussein said that when the people attending the wedding went to the bride’s house, when the ship reached the bank of the Padma River in the town of Shibgangi, lightning struck.
Hussein said: “We have information on 17 deaths and several others hospitalized.”
Fire department officer Meherul Islam said that 14 people were injured and taken to the hospital. The groom is one of the injured.
Lightning kills hundreds of people in Bangladesh every year. Bangladesh declared lightning strikes a natural disaster in 2016. In May alone, more than 200 people died, of which 82 people died in one day.
Most lightning deaths usually occur in the warm months of March to July.
Experts say that the increase in fatal lightning strikes is related to deforestation, which has led to the disappearance of many tall trees that previously caused lightning strikes.
