i visited tofino Study Abroad in Victoria on Vancouver Island. As soon as I landed, it felt like everyone was asking me when I was going because it’s one of the most popular spots!

I finally embarked on an epic road trip around Vancouver Island with 9 friends and it did not disappoint. I’m finally sharing all my thoughts on the best things to do in and around Tofino, how to get there, and where to stay.

But let’s start with some more information about the place!

Tofino is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. The area around Tofino is part of the traditional territory of the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation, who have lived in the area for thousands of years.

It is now located within the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which is home to a variety of marine and terrestrial species, including bears, wolves, whales and sea otters.

The town of Tofino has a population of approximately 2,000 but attracts thousands of visitors each year to enjoy its natural beauty and outdoor activities.

Tofino is famous for surfing and has some of the best waves in North America. The town hosts several surf competitions each year, including the Rip Curl Pro Tofino.

If you’re going all the way to Tofino, it’s worth making the most of your time there. Here are 20 things to do in Tofino!

As mentioned earlier, Tofino is known for its world-class surf waves, attracting surfers from all over the world. The town has a number of surf schools and shops offering rentals and lessons.

Obviously, it’s best to do this in warm weather, as the waves can get pretty rough in the harsh winter weather!

Experience the beauty of Tofino’s coastline by kayak. There are also plenty of shallow tidal areas and calm bay waters to explore.

All levels of experience are welcome.

fishing

Tofino is home to many fish species, including salmon and halibut. Charter a boat and experience the thrill of having dinner yourself.

whale watching

Tofino is the best place for whale watching. Tour and observe gray, humpback and orca whales.

There are several resident Orca pods in the area, so if the time of year is right, your chances are great! February to November is possible, but June to September is best.

camping

There are several campgrounds in Tofino, including the popular Green Point Campground in the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Wake up to the sounds of the ocean and enjoy the beauty of the West Coast.

hiking

Tofino offers many hiking trails, including the popular Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, where you can explore temperate rainforests, sandy beaches and rugged coastline.

The Rainforest Walk is primarily an easy walk along a boardwalk, with two loop options, each over 1 kilometer.

Just 40 minutes south of Tofino, Ucluelet’s Lighthouse Loop is another great option for enjoying the scenery.

The South Beach Trail is unique for its rock formations on the beach, which may or may not have been used in the filming of Twilight…

It was one of the highlights of Tofino, not something I thought I would do in Canada.

Travel by boat or seaplane to the remote hot springs of Maquina Provincial Park. Located on a small island, the hot spring offers a unique and relaxing experience.

Tofino has many beautiful beaches to explore, including Long Beach, Chesterman Beach, and Cox Bay Beach. Each beach has its own unique experience.

Paddle boarding is a fun and relaxing way to explore Tofino’s waterways. Provide rental and travel services. You don’t need experience!

wildlife viewing

Tofino is home to a variety of wildlife including black bears, bald eagles, sea otters and more. Take a guided tour and get up close and personal with these animals…and maybe a few!

You can actually take a boat to go bear watching, and some tours offer both whale and bear watching!

practice your photography

Tofino’s stunning landscape offers endless opportunities for photographers. Capture the beauty of the coastline, wildlife and sunsets.

Honestly, you can’t help but be inspired here!

I actually entered my university’s photo contest for international students using photos taken in Tofino and won! In retrospect, it was pretty basic and unsurprising…but this was the days before Instagram! no filter…

For its size, Tofino has many galleries to visit. Tofino has a thriving art scene, with many galleries showcasing the work of local artists. This is where ideas are attracted.

I have found this to be the case in many places on Vancouver Island and surrounding islands, including salt spring islandone of my favorites.

Learn about the Aboriginal culture of the area on a cultural tour. West Coast Aquatic Safaris hosts cultural tours throughout the summer.

Obviously it depends on the weather, but when I was in Tofino, there was a storm!

Tofino is known for its violent winter storms, with waves lapping the shoreline and wind blowing through the trees.

You need to pay attention to the tides and how easily the waves are higher than you think! With expansive waterfront windows, the Wickaninnish Inn is a great place to watch storms from the comfort of your interior.

Visit the nearby Cowichan Valley and sample local wines. The valley is known for its outstanding wineries and vineyards.

You can also visit a Tofino distillery and sample their different spirits inspired by the surrounding landscape.

It’s definitely a more advanced thing to do, but if you do, it’s awesome! Take in the breathtaking views of Tofino from a whole new perspective on a helicopter tour.

Sightseeing flight

Again, this isn’t a budget-friendly option, but it’s worth a shot.

Fly over Tofino and the surrounding area on a scenic flight for stunning views of the rugged coastline, forests, and mountains. Some flights even include aerial whale watching.

Seaplanes are a regular on Vancouver Island and a great way to see and see the sights!

Tofino’s many cafes and restaurants serve delicious food that has been carefully considered to reflect the location and waterfront location.

Chocolate Tofino, Wildside Grill and Shed are three of the most popular places to eat.

Explore Tofino and its surroundings on two wheels with a guided bike tour, or if you prefer, venture out on your own!

Enjoy the scenery and fresh air as you cycle along beaches, forests and quiet country roads. Electric bicycles are also readily available.

Where to Stay in Tofino

A budget option, but with stunning views of the ocean from the common areas.

Duffin Bay Resort

Located on a quiet bay, this resort offers affordable accommodation with beautiful ocean views. The rooms are cozy and comfortable, and the resort has a hot tub and outdoor fire pits for guests to enjoy.

Tofino Resort + Marina

Located on the beachfront, this resort offers accommodation with stunning ocean views, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the town centre. The resort features restaurants, a spa and fitness center, and offers an array of activities and adventures.

The Wickenish Guest House

Located on Chesterman Beach, this luxury resort offers beautiful rooms and suites with ocean or forest views. The resort features restaurants, a spa and fitness center, and offers an array of activities and adventures.

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort

Set in a remote wilderness setting, this luxury resort offers glamping-style accommodation in beautiful tents with comfortable furnishings. The resort offers fine dining, spa services, and a range of outdoor activities and adventures. Be aware that this resort is only open in summer and comes with a hefty price tag.

How to Get to Tofino

By car: Tofino is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island and can be reached by car from Victoria or Nanaimo. From Victoria, take Hwy 1 to Nanaimo, then take Hwy 19 north to Hwy 4, which leads to Tofino. Approximately 5-6 hours drive from Victoria and 3 hours drive from Nanaimo.

By bus: You can also take a bus to Tofino from Vancouver or Victoria. Several bus companies, including Tofino Bus and Island Link Bus, offer regular service from these cities to Tofino.

air transport: The closest airport to Tofino is Tofino Long Beach Airport (YAZ), which is served by several airlines including Pacific Coast Airlines and KD Airlines. The airport is about 20 minutes south of Tofino and offers a shuttle service to and from town. Alternatively, visitors can fly into Victoria or Nanaimo and rent a car or take a bus to Tofino.
