These gluten-free wings are baked in the oven until the chicken is crispy and tender, then tossed with dairy-free buffalo sauce. They are simple, slightly spicy and even better when eaten with my dish gluten free ranch for your next game day.
Gluten-free buffalo wings are one of the few things that can get me excited about an afternoon watching football. Historically, this has meant low motivation, as it's nearly impossible to find a sports bar that doesn't serve its wings in other breaded ingredients.
But as the weather gets colder and Sunday becomes more dangerous, I relinquish control of the remote and get into the kitchen to whip up my gluten-free wings to help me get through game day.
How to Make Gluten-Free Crispy Chicken Wings
growing up, my mom always baked our wings in the oven and I never found them lacking in crispiness. Because chicken wings have such a high skin-to-meat ratio, a lot of fat is created during the baking process, which essentially causes the wings to fry in their own tallow.
The fat content of each wing will vary, and sometimes you need to pour off some of the fat partway through baking, but most of the time you'll benefit from the thin layer of oil that appears when you flip your gluten-free wings partway through. bake.
Coated Gluten Free Wings
If you want a crispier texture, similar to the fried chicken wings you get at sports bars, you can coat your gluten-free wings with flour or starch before baking them in the oven.
Here are some options:
- 1 tablespoon baking powder (not soda)
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch or arrowroot starch
- ¼ cup all-purpose gluten-free flour
- ¼ cup white rice flour
for these Gluten-Free Buffalo Cauliflower After the bites, I scooped them into a batter made from chickpea flour. But this is not necessary for chicken wings, which themselves have a lot of fat and not much moisture.
Honestly, I find that keeping it simple and not making any oversights is my favorite way to make gluten-free chicken wings. They're going to be coated with sauce anyway, so crunch isn't my primary goal.
Make Dairy-Free Buffalo Sauce
Making your own buffalo sauce is so easy, buying pre-made bottled buffalo sauce at the store is a fool's errand. All you need are two ingredients: butter and hot sauce.
To make this dairy-free buffalo sauce, just use plant-based butter (here’s my favorite brand). When it comes to hot sauce, I'm a big fan of tradition. My favorite of these gluten-free buffalo wings is Franks Red Hot. Not only is it a classic, but it's also low FODMAP. Chaloula is a close second, albeit less traditional.
When mixed with cream, the hot sauce will mellow and become less spicy. You can always adjust the proportions to meet your spice needs or add more hot sauce to the finished wings when serving.
