5 home improvement projects to do in summer
Give your front door a new look with fun paint colors
Put a fresh coat of paint on your door is a great way to light up and clean things up from the outside. This is one of my most excited projects this summer! Jack recently went shopping for all the softeners we needed (paint, brushes, sanders, etc.) so we were ready to go when the time came. We’ve never liked our front door color since we moved in and somehow it took us two years to get something done.we have decided Benjamin Moore’s “Hale Navy” Interior/exterior doors and decorative enamel in satin finish. If you want to repaint the front door, it will first need to be sanded and possibly several coats of paint (primer and front door paint and trim paint). You will also need supplies like paint tape, brushes and drop cloths to protect the floor/stairs. Make sure to get the right paint for your door type (wood/steel) and discuss the process with your local paint shop so you can get it right the first time. Some other interesting door color options: neutral colorstatement and vivid, warm colors (Sundance, Brick red– For farmhouse appeal, sweet orange) or cool tones (mobile board black, blue dragon).
Expand or build a garden
Moving into a house with a pre-built garden can be very helpful. But not everyone has this privilege. Even if a pre-built garden isn’t necessarily your style, there are a few things to get started. Remember, you don’t need to make it perfect all at once. Gardening is a lot of work, So do one small project at a time. If you start too big, you may struggle to keep up with it, and there is nothing worse than a runaway garden. if you start from scratchmaybe pick a spot or two for a flower or vegetable garden, and start small. Start with some of your favorite things And every year you can add more. This year we added another vegetable garden for squash, squash, zucchini and some berry bushes. We also added flowers to our currently well-established garden which will bloom in July/August as the flowers planted prior to our move in were mostly spring blooming.here are some Jess’s Favorite Garden Tools.
Clean and organize the garage
We had childcare on Memorial Day and we decided to fix our garage. This has been on our list for a while, but was put off as it wasn’t a very engaging task. We started by clearing everything in the garage into a big pile of junk in the driveway. Pooh. I must admit that this part of the process wasn’t fun, and there was definitely an overwhelming anxiety I wanted to crawl into a hole and forget about it all. But, we persevered, and thank goodness we did because the final product was fantastic.
Once everything was cleared from our garage, we started piling up: yard sale items, things to give away (Salvation Army/Listening Center), dumping, burning and keeping. We add old wood to the burn pile, take my husband’s truck full of sorted trash to the junkyard, and organize items to give away/sell. Then we start organizing the items we want to keep. We hang summer and winter sports gear in one section, organize gadgets and take advantage of cupboards and drawers to organize. We keep gardening and other yard tools in another area, and use other cubbies to sort pots, buckets, and fertilizer. Our garage now looks clean and spacious and we can easily find anything. It’s a satisfying job and I highly recommend it. It took us about 4 hours to complete and it was so worth it!
Clean and organize the basement
The next big item on our list is cleaning and decluttering the basement. If you’re anything like us, you’re feeling like a million plastic bins filled with everything from Christmas decorations to camping gear that pile up taking up space in your basement. Every time you go to the trash to pick up something, you have to struggle through the crowd to find what you’re looking for. It’s a nightmare. We are already planning to buy some Shelved from container store Create a home for our litter box and allow easy access and clean-up of our basement space. This will have a huge impact. We also plan to donate, sell and dispose of things we no longer need through a similar process to the garage. This stuff builds up quickly and easily and I can’t imagine what will happen in a few years when we’ve only been at home for two years! After the basement is cleaned, it is a great place for the kids to play, play games and other fun activities. Organizing this space will make it more attractive and functional.
Decorate your outdoor space
Decorating your backyard and patio in summer is a fun way to take advantage of your outdoor space and prepare for fun parties throughout the summer. Investing in outdoor space can get expensive, so help set a budget. You can always add to your space each year.Last summer we invested some String Party LightsEra, Solar street light and tiki flashlights. We got one this summer Small Outdoor Furniture Set, only stove And plan to place a stone patio. Target’s outdoor furniture sets are very affordable. Outdoor furniture can be very expensive, and we don’t want to spend a lot of money on it. While it was a pain to assemble, it’s been great so far! It looks sturdy and of good quality at an affordable price. Exactly what we wanted.Jess’ outdoor furniture from Pottery Barn’s Indian Collection She loves too.
Summer is a great time to check out some items that have been on your list for a while. Being able to be outside in the sun makes doing these things a lot more enjoyable. Winter is here, and you’ll be happy to invest your time and expense into these projects that will benefit you for years to come.
