Friendships have been at the forefront of my mind lately. This poem comes from @hannahrowrites This popped up on my feed the other day and I thought it was a beautiful encapsulation of the power and power of female friendship.
Friendships have always been important to me and I have been lucky enough to have many strong friendships at all stages of my life. I go on weekly walks with some friends to let off steam, laugh, express empathy and be vulnerable. I have some childhood friends that I only text occasionally, but when we get back together it feels like it’s all over. We know each other so well, which makes us feel very comforted and special.
I could go on and on about all the reasons I love and cherish female friendships, but here are my 5 favorite reasons. What’s yours?

They know and understand firsthand the trials and tribulations of women
While our male counterparts can try to understand what women endure, they will never fully understand. From menstruation to pregnancy and childbirth to sexism, inequality and trauma, the list goes on.as Lake Street Diving As an eloquent saying goes, “Being a woman is a full-time job.” Having your girlfriend there to empathize is crucial. Venting about your own difficulties and the general unfairness of the world is not only helpful, but necessary for mental and emotional health and well-being. Not only do we need to empathize with each other, but we need to come together to fight this fight and make a change. We can’t make our voices heard without each other.
Girlfriends can make you laugh harder than anyone else
Laughter is the best medicine, right? Well, your girlfriend is the only person in the world who can make you laugh harder (or even cry). Laughter is the best way to get through the hard times, celebrate the good times and get through the boring times. It inspires us, brings us joy, and illuminates our lives. It gives us hope when we feel like we can’t move on and helps us know we’re not alone.
They’ll give you the harsh truth
A true friend is someone who is true to you when no one else is. We know that we can rely on our best friends to tell us the truth even when we don’t want to hear it. It can be challenging in the moment, and sometimes we might even resent them for it, but ultimately we’re grateful that our friends can be the people in our lives that give us a wake-up call when we need it most.
No matter what, your female friends will be by your side
I know I can count on my best girlfriend to be there for me through thick and thin. I’ve been through my lows and my most loyal girlfriends have been there to help cheer me up and get my booty back in shape. They were there to comfort me when I was sad, and then became my biggest cheerleaders when I faced this shitty world again. I know I can rely on them, but I don’t know what I would do without them.
Girlfriends will enrich and inspire you
One of the most wonderful things about our strongest, truest friends is that they nurture us and encourage us to pursue our dreams. They have our best interests at heart and want us to be the best version of ourselves. When no one else believed in us, they believed in us even if we didn’t believe in ourselves! What a special thing.
Our girlfriends are a shoulder to cry on, a smile to make us laugh, and a soul to connect with on the deepest level. They’re the ones we instantly relate to. It’s these true soulmates who fill our glasses, inspire us, and make us feel so loved and cared for. I don’t know what I would do without female friendships, but I know they will continue to grow and change just like I do. I look forward to all the love, inspiration and joy these beautiful women can bring.
