GOne month after the partial collapse of a 12-story skyscraper in Florida, the US military has identified the remains of the last missing person. The death toll from the devastating accident rose to 98. The mayor of Miami-Dade, Daniella Levine Cava, announced it on Monday evening. A 54-year-old woman was previously believed to be missing.
On June 24, a residential area with approximately 130 units in Champlain Towers South near Miami partially collapsed due to unknown reasons. The rest of the building was in danger of collapsing and was later deliberately blown up. The survivors were only found in the first few hours after the collapse. About two weeks ago, the rescue turned into a salvage operation. Over the weekend, the fire brigade finally stopped rescue work at the scene of the accident.
Almost all the debris was removed and stored near the Miami International Airport. There, police forensic scientists are continuing to search for human remains and personal belongings. This disaster severely shocked the community and the entire country.
Mayor Levin Kava talked about an “unimaginable tragedy” on Monday. Nothing can bring the “98 Angels” back, but the emergency services department has done everything to at least give relatives a certainty that it can be closed.
