JOnathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne became the first German lightweight rowers to win an Olympic medal. The duo from Krefeld and Mainz admitted to losing to Ireland by a narrow margin on Tokyo’s Sea Forest Waterway on Thursday, and won the silver medal. The bronze went to the Italian ship.
Since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics premiered, no German doubles has successfully entered the medal list. However, for women, 2000 and 2004 are silver. Now, Rommelmann/Osborne has played a brave match under difficult wind conditions, bringing the man into the Olympic history book.
Only 0.86 seconds behind
On the 2000-meter-long route, there is a push wind under harsh but controllable conditions. Rommelmann and Osborne were in the lead for a long time, but had to let the powerful Irishman pass in the last section of the route. The gap is only 0.86 seconds.
The two have already dominated the game in the semifinals and won by a big score. Only the Irish Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy created a bigger exclamation mark in their preliminaries and set a new world record. Therefore, Rommelmann and Osborne realized that besides the Italians, the most important thing was to defeat the ships from Green Island to get the gold medal.
These two lightweight figures have gained confidence for gold projects mainly in Austria. In the training camp before the start of the game, they “take a big step forward and now control a lot of boats.”
