For the first time in 45 years, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a spending bill to fund Medicaid without the Hyde Amendment. The bill aims to protect taxpayers from being forced to pay for abortions. The spending bill will face severe obstacles in the Senate, but the bill still sets a terrible precedent for taxpayers who support life.
The bill includes 7 of the 12 annual appropriations bills, which are used to fund the government’s next fiscal year beginning on October 1. Pass the House of Representatives 219-208 along the partisan line.
Republicans opposed the bill because the Democrats removed two basic provisions related to abortion: the Hyde Amendment and the Weldon Amendment, which prohibit agencies receiving federal funds from discriminating against entities because they refuse to provide or pay Abortion costs.
Ironically, a Democratic congressman who called the Hyde Amendment a racist declared that it was probably the most racist and most dishonest remarks ever made about abortion and low-income Americans. As Tyler O’Neill wrote:
“These regulations have long had a terrible and disproportionate impact on low-income women and women of color,” argued Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee. “Getting them out of books will be a big step forward for reproduction and racial justice.”
