The target of the attack was the oil tanker Mercer Street flying the Liberian flag in the northeastern part of Masira Island, Oman. The site is located more than 185 miles southeast of Muscat, the capital of Oman.
Israeli officials did not immediately acknowledge the attack, but as Tehran’s nuclear agreement negotiations with world powers are still at a standstill, tensions between the country and Iran have increased.
In recent months, in the shadow war between the two countries, other Israeli-related ships have also been targeted, and Israeli officials blamed the attacks on the Islamic Republic.
At the same time, Israel is suspected of participating in a series of major attacks on Iran’s nuclear program.
London-based Zodiac Maritime is part of the Zodiac Group of Israeli billionaire Eyal Ofer. The company issued a statement stating that the ship is the Liberian flag tanker Mercer Street and is owned by the Japanese. The British Ministry of Defence had earlier mistakenly identified the owner of the ship.
Zodiac Maritime described the attack on Thursday night as “piracy” but did not elaborate further.
It was later stated that the attack resulted in the death of two crew members, one from Britain and the other from Romania.
It said that the company “was not aware of causing harm to any other personnel.”
