After a summer that amazes British holidaymakers – and sometimes annoys herself by accidentally sinking a ship – Walrus Wally It seems to be trying to go home.
British divers marine life rescue (BDMLR) said on Tuesday that Wally has left the Isles of Scilly, where he has lived since June, and he has been seen in waters near Ireland.
Marine experts hope this creature is returning to Svalbard between mainland Norway Norway And the North Pole.
Lizzi Larbalestier of BDMLR said that Wally’s departure from Scily is good news. “Hopefully he will keep going. He moves northward very well,” she said. BDMLR did not say exactly where he was found because they did not want anyone to hunt him down. “We don’t want hundreds of people trying to find him,” Larbalestier said.
“He was in a very busy port in St. Mary’s [the largest of the Isles of Scilly] This is not safe for him or other port users. We hope that people will give him the space he needs now. “
The walrus, believed to be about four years old, has traveled about 2,500 miles along the western coast. Europe, Including Spain, Wales and Cornwall, since March.
On Scilly, when he climbed onto the ship to try to rest, he sank the ship, causing a sensation. In the end, he was provided with a pontoon as a resting place for him to fish for clams and shrimps in the clear shallow waters around the island.
Larbalestier said that the professional boat people who departed from St Mary’s respected him, but sometimes he was surrounded by too many boats. “Some of them are just too close,” she said.
Hopefully, once he gets fat on Scily, he will go home. “He shouldn’t be here in the first place. His navigation must have been messed up. He has been swimming until he gets here,” Labalestier said.
“He is an amazing creature, but we hope we don’t see him again. He is obviously looking for social connections, which is why he finally came to the harbor. But the right thing to do is to let him go home with the other walruses. “
