As part of the Florida snake removal challenge, a total of 223 Burmese pythons were hunted, one of which was nearly 16 feet long.
The 2021 Florida Python Challenge is a state-organized event that encourages participants to find and destroy Burmese Python, which is classified as an invasive species by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
The highest bonus of $10,000 was awarded to retired law enforcement officer Charlie Ducton, who was helped by his son Chance Dalton.
As part of their hunting efforts, the couple destroyed a python nest containing 22 eggs. In total, they killed 41 non-native snakes in the Everglades.
Ducton, who had a serious hunting accident in 2016, believes that his hunting experience is helpful to him in the python incident
Dalton told the Florida news site Local10: “He called me and said,’Hey, you know, this is the last night of the game. Can you come out and help me?’ I said,’Of course I’m there.'”
Other winners included Hunter, who won $1,500 for catching snakes up to 15 feet 9 inches long.

The US Geological Survey said that wild Burmese pythons in Florida did not cause human deaths, although the FWC pointed out that they may pose a threat to human safety and may hunt pets.
Research is ongoing to find out how pythons affect native mammal species.
