According to reports, federal health officials will speed up their efforts to provide booster shots of the Covid-19 vaccine to Americans with weakened immune functions.
It is expected that the Food and Drug Administration will soon review new data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that supports the use of additional vaccine injections for people with weakened immune systems. The Washington Post reported on Friday.
According to news media reports, FDA officials will modify the emergency use authorization of the coronavirus vaccine to include additional doses for people with weakened immune systems if they are affected by the data.
An anonymous federal official told the Washington Post that additional jabs may be approved within days or weeks.
The New York Times also Friday report The FDA is stepping up its efforts to recommend additional doses for those with weakened immune functions.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top US infectious disease expert and President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, said in an interview with The Times: “The data clearly shows that they did not get a good response from the beginning” and additional dose.
Fauci added: “There are many very compelling reasons to do this as soon as possible.”
Due to the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus, Covid-19 cases have surged across the country.
