According to the police, a 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder, and another 14-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
Both were detained at the East London Police Station.
Detective Inspector John Marriott of the Metropolitan Crime Professional Command said: “We believe that James confronted a group of young people and caused riots and was stabbed as a result.
“The cruelty of this reaction is shocking. We are with James’ family, who are deeply distressed by the loss.
“The arrest of these two people is a major development, but we still need the help of the public to fully understand what happened on Monday night.
“I know a lot of people were there when the murder happened. I want them to come forward.
“I also believe that there will be parents who know that their children are there or are involved. I call on them to do wise things and get in touch with us.
“A dedicated police team is working hard to piece together the tragic circumstances that led to this murder and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
He wrote on Twitter afterwards: “A dedicated team of police officers is working hard to piece together what caused this man’s life. All our hearts are with his family and friends because they accepted their loss. I want to thank the officials, paramedics and the public who helped.”
